SAVING CALI

BY: TAMI HOTTES (please leave a message for Tami if you are intested in helping her rescue this mustang at: https://www.facebook.com/thottes)

June 21 & 22 2013

With camera in hand, I attended my very first Mustang and Burro adoption event. My mission was to observe, take pictures and make sure the horses and burros were being treated humanely, being fed well and that they had plenty of fresh water. It was very hot and humid in Ewing Illinois. I sure didn't expect to lock eyes with one of the mustang and fall in love with her! Besides! I have always preferred geldings!

I went to each pen starting with #1. My heart went out to the cute little burros that never were adopted. I took pictures of the information sheets that told where they were from, age and description. All had been captured.

The next pen was the yearling pen. All had been born at facilities. I wondered with contempt, how many miles and how fast had their pregnant mothers been stampeded and terrorized before they were forced into the trap. I could barely look at the BLM employees for fear I would say something that would merit my removal from the premises!

Next up .... Mares.  All of the mares had been captured except for Cali. She had been born at a facility in California. Hence the name "Cali" One of the mares, a big black beauty, kept the other mares away from us gawkers but Cali and I locked eyes. She seemed to say to me "Please get me out of here!" "I have lived my whole life in a feedlot!" She had a sad and defeated look in those eyes.

My heart ached for her but I had no where to take her and nothing to take her in! But I swore to everyone there that I would get ger home! The price on her head? A mere 25 dollars.

The forth and final pen were 2 year olds...all born in captivity... I have since found a place to keep her and have arranged for transportation in which I will go with the transporter.

All totaled, it will cost 2400 dollars to adopt a 25 dollar mare! Worth every penny of it!

Some of what we do -

We educate the public on the horses' contribution to humanity.

Provide much needed education to the public on wild horse and burro preservation.

Preserve the wild horses in their natural habitat. We photograph and document the colors, the sexes, and ages. We frequently monitor their conditions and travel patterns. These would include, but not limited to - the Virginia Range in the Carson Valley and the Virginia Highlands.

We help horses in need of finding good/approved homes.

Assisting owners of horses that are in need of help - we either help, or find the assistance that they need.

Provide assistance to government agencies -such as The Bureau of Land Management in their adoption program.

We work with The Nevada Dept of Transportation in cleaning the highway of debris that would lure the horses to the roadway. We also work with NDOT on finding solutions that benefit both the motorists and the wild horses in keeping the roads safe in Northern Nevada.
